Shawna C. Willey, MD, FACS, is a a professor of surgeryat Georgetown University Medical Center, vice chairman of clinical affairs in the Surgery Department at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and director of MedStar’s Regional Breast Health Program. She also is a member of the Breast Cancer Program at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C.
A respected breast surgeon with more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Willey is recognized nationally and internationally for her leadership and expertise. A past president of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Dr. Willey has performed medical mission work and conducted international health education programs throughout the world.
Dr. Willey has a particular interest in the surgical management and surveillance of patients who are gene mutation carriers, especially those who undergo prophylactic mastectomy. She is a pioneer in the field of nipple-sparing mastectomy and has authored several publications on the topic. Along with Dr. Scott Spear, Dr. Willey has co-chaired three BC3 conferences (Breast Cancer Coordinated Care) that address local and regional control of breast cancer. In addition, she co-edited the second and third editions of Surgery of the Breast.
Dr. Willey believes strongly in MedStar Georgetown’s tradition of focusing on both excellent clinical care and research that advances the field of breast surgery. She divides her time between treating patients with the most advanced care available and conducting research to benefit patients in the future.
Dr. Willey is principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous clinical trials. Subjects under study include predictors of post-mastectomy local-regional recurrence and distant metastases, and management of a positive lymph node in patients receiving preoperative chemotherapy. In addition, she is a prolific author and presenter at numerous national and international conferences.
Dr. Willey has spent her entire career in the Washington, DC, area, mentoring many students, residents and breast surgery fellows. She is a member of the American Society for Clinical Oncology, Breast Surgery International and many other professional organizations. Among her many honors and awards are recognitions as Top Doctor (U.S. News & World Report), Best Doctors, and America’s Top Doctors.
